Cold Air Returns, Not Just A Vent on Your Wall

Your planning the perfect arrangement of your furniture in each room of your house. You know you don’t want to cover the heat register or that room could be cold, but what about the other vent in the room? Blocking the cold air return is the easiest way to weaken your heating and cooling system.

What is it?

Cold air returns do exactly what they are named, they provide air back into your heating systems. When they are blocked it reduces the airflow to your blower. If you block this it doesn’t slow your fan it creates positive air pressure. This means that instead of pulling air easily back into your system, your furnace fan will pull air in through cracks and holes in your ducting, house, windows and doors.

Why is this a problem?

Anytime air flow is restricted it causes premature problems. When heating your home improper air flow can cause the heat exchanger inside the blower compartment to store to much heat. Over time this will cause a crack. When the cracks become too big, carbon monoxide can leak into your home. Not only is this extremely dangerous to your health, but you will also need to replace your heating systems. Any cracks need to be addressed immediately.

When running your air conditioning, limited air flow can cause the evaporator coil to keep refrigerant inside to stay longer than it should. This can cause the coil to freeze over. This will make your air conditioner inefficient. The frozen coil can cause water damage. Also if the system doesn’t turn off in time damage to the outside compressor can cause a very expensive problem.

The cold air returns are an essential part of your heating and cooling system. Checking them from blockage and debris is an important maintenance step that is easy and can save you money.

The Difference Between Furnace Cleaning And Duct Cleaning

If you live in Calgary or Alberta in general you have heard of furnace and duct cleaning, but you may not know what is involved in the process, or how they differ from each other. Furnace cleaning refers to the yearly professional inspection and cleaning, your furnace requires to run as safely and efficiently as possible. Yearly maintenance helps your system's components last longer. This annual checkup doesn't just include cleaning, it also involves spotting and correcting malfunctions before they cause serious damage. As part of routine furnace maintenance, your furnace technician will:Clean the blower motor and make sure it's running right, and making no noiseMeasure your air flow

Test the gas pressure and check for leaks

Clean and inspect the heat exchanger and combustion chamber assembly

Check for loose wires and electrical connections

Test the thermostat and controls

Test for carbon monoxide gas leaks

Check your ducts for blockages and leaksHow Duct Cleaning Differs

Yearly furnace cleaning includes a basic duct inspection, but it doesn't include duct cleaning. Most duct work will stay perfectly clean for a couple years therefore not needing to be cleaned annually. Instead, the ducts should be thoroughly inspected, separately from routine maintenance, at least once every two years to decide whether or not they require cleaning. If you have pets or smokers in the home, consider duct cleaning every couple of years, but an average home can go three years without cleaning.Regularly check inside the accessible parts of your ductwork and schedule an inspection if you find moisture or patches of discoloration, which suggest mold growth, or evidence of pests. If your ducts do need cleaning, your technician will bring in a vacuum system that will be connected to your duct system. The air registers and vents will be cleaned first, then a hose will run through your ducts to remove debris and simultaneously suck it out. This method prevents dust and other debris from entering your rooms. If your furnace or duct system is due for a cleaning, please call Air Raid Furnace & Duct in your Calgary area.
